Focus on comfort and clear communication.
A first visit is an opportunity to understand the person’s routines, questions, goals, and practical needs. It does not need to look perfect. Families can make the visit easier by choosing a quiet place to talk, having a trusted family member or support person available if the person wants one, and writing down questions ahead of time.
The person receiving support should be included in the conversation whenever possible. Their routines, preferences, goals, communication style, and sense of privacy matter.
Useful information to organize
- A list of the questions you want answered.
- Names and contact information for existing providers or coordinators, when appropriate.
- General information about the support that is already in place.
- Any immediate practical concerns, such as difficult routines or changes since returning home.
- Coverage, authorization, or waiver information you have already received.
Only share information through the appropriate channel. A public website form is for general callback requests, not detailed health information.
What a good visit can clarify
A productive first visit can help a family understand the type of support being explored, the information required for a decision, the possible role of a physician or payer, and what may happen next. It is also a chance to ask how communication with family members, caregivers, and other members of the care team will work.
Not every question can be answered in one visit. Eligibility, coverage, authorization, staffing, and clinical needs may require follow-up. Clear expectations are more useful than rushed promises.
After the visit
Before the conversation ends, confirm who will follow up, what documents or authorizations may be needed, and the best number to call with questions. Keeping a short written summary can help everyone stay aligned.
Need to talk through your situation?
A&A can discuss the type of support you are exploring and explain the next practical question. Please do not send private health information through the public website form.
