Ohio Shared Living: questions to ask before exploring support

A person-centered set of questions for families considering whether Ohio Shared Living may be worth discussing with their support team.

Begin with the life the person wants.

Ohio Shared Living is a support model that may be part of some people’s planning conversations. It should never be reduced to a housing shortcut. A serious conversation begins with the person’s preferences, relationships, privacy, routines, goals, and right to have a real voice in decisions about where and how they live.

Questions to explore with the support team

  • What does the person want from home life and community participation?
  • What support needs should be understood before considering any option?
  • How will privacy, choice, communication, and personal routines be protected?
  • What roles do the person, family, guardian, service coordinator, and provider each have?
  • What program rules, authorization, and provider requirements apply?

Take time to understand fit

A support arrangement should be considered carefully, with the person’s goals at the center. It is appropriate to ask detailed questions, request clear explanations, and use official Ohio DODD or county-board resources to understand current requirements.
